Embroidered Medieval Diptych Bag

roll your mouse over the thumbnails to see an enlarged image.

This bag was created to protect a personal medieval-style diptych. (You can see more of this by clicking here)

The bag is made from hand dyed silk velvet, lined with linen. The sides and top of the bag are silk - tablet woven directly onto the seams.

The gold thread stars (estorils) are embroidered as separate pieces which have then been sewn to the velvet using additional gold thread couched to the surface. Other decoration includes more couching and the addition of sterling silver spangles.

The braids, for both drawstrings and handles and the laces for the inner protective case, are fingerloop braids from 15c instructions, while the slides on the drawstrings are gold and silk chevron knops, formed over a wooden core.

The bottom silk tassels are finished with gilt turks' head knots.
