Gina-B Silkwork

Knotted buttons, circa 1596

roll your mouse over the thumbnails to see an enlarged image.

These buttons are based on some shown in Janet Arnold's Patterns of Fashion book, dating to 1596.

The domed shape is formed using linen and paste, in the same way as the early Dorset high tops were made.

The mould has then been covered in black silk fabric, over which a knotwork of fine twisted silk cord has been worked.

The second image shows the completed gown, by Harman Hay

(please note, the photo has been lightened to show the black buttons on the black ground a little better!)
