Leek buttons

Silk wrapped 'Leek' buttons (so called from the area in England famous for making them) are often found on Georgian coats and collars.

The most famous design is the Death's head button - the origin of the name is unknown, but the button can be seen on many Georgian coats and depicted in paintings.

A much earlier example of the technique is shown in Janet Arnold's Pattern of Fashion book, and there are similar buttons used as bookmarkers which date to the 15th century.

There are numerous variations, and the industry continued for some time.
