Luton Museum Gold & Silver ribbon reconstruction

This silver, silver-gilt and silk braid is a re-creation of one recovered which dates to c1500. The re-creation is based on detailed photographs and analysis made when the fragments were found.

The braid is woven using a basic tabby weave either side, while the centre areas required more manipulation. The picots either side are created by twisting the silver weft thread before throwing the next pass.

This braid will form part of a new medieval gallery at Luton Museum.
