Livery and Maintenance is an umbrella organisation for a number of late 15th century historical interpretation groups - with members from across England - who depict the life of the period now known as the Wars of the Roses (1450 - 1487)
Why the Wars of the Roses?
Late 15th Century is a fascinating time in English History. The military aspects of the time provide events with colour and excitement, as fighting with polearms, swords and practicing archery is demonstrated.
The public are always fascinated by swords, and children love to come into the camps and try on armour. Aside from the spectacle of the military, demonstrations of 15th Century life can be enthralling, as the Hollywood myths of medieval England are challenged.
Details of clothing, cooking and medieval craft skills are displayed in an educational yet entertaining way. The Wars of the Roses are featured in the National Curriculum Key Stage 3 'Medieval Realms'. The Wars of the Roses ended soon after the Battle of Bosworth Field, and the Tudor dynasty was born. Tudors are covered in the National Curriculum at Key Stage 2, and so this transitional period is of particular interest to schools and to families wanting to enhance their child's learning. Colourful, visual presentations, plus interaction with the historical interpreters fires an enthusiam for history, and ensures a day out they will not forget!.
Although member groups work individually, several times a year we aim to come together en masse to work together for a larger spectacle.
The diversity of the individual groups, brought together under a common goal of authentic and high-quality public displays, results in richly varied late 15th Century events. Employers in 2003 included English Heritage, Lincoln Castle and Tutbury Castle.
In addition to the military aspect, our medieval camps bustle with the daily life of the soldiers' women and families. Groups cook using replica pots and utensils and amuse themselves playing medieval games, dancing and demonstrating medieval crafts.
L&M provided the main 15th C camp at English Heritage's showpiece event at Stoneleigh in 2003 - 'Festival of History', at which we provided a full and busy encampment, with displays including cooking, clothing, games, medicine, mumming and textile crafts, as well as timetabled military slots in the arena, involving drill and combat displays and the use of cannon.
Livery and Maintenance brings history alive - for everyone!
