Database of silkwomen Posted on: 04/03/08 at 13:55:05 GMT
In the last few days I have been going through our database of silkwomen. Currently we have the names of 182 women known to be silkwomen, plus another half dozen or so who might well be silkwomen and a substantial number of more vague possibles. This list is continually growing as one document leads on to another.
It is distinctly possible that some women are listed twice (or more) having re/married and thus traded under more than one name. For example, Isabel Frowyk is on the list only once but had documentary evidence not shown that her first husband was John Bally, her second William Otes and her third was Henry Frowyk, we might have had her on the list three times. Many other silkwomen won’t appear in the surviving records at all.
The type of information about the women varies considerably. For some we have quite a bit of detailed information about both their business and family situations, while others are known from a single source with little detail. As always with this type of research, much of the information raises at least as many questions as it answers and care is needed in how we interpret the information we have.

This seems to be a good time to post a quick update on the database. It now stands at 217 silkwomen plus the possibles.
I am now concentrating on finding out as much as possible about these women.
